Beg, Borrow or Steal

I was thinking about Nat and thinking about my friend, Megan. Megan visited me tonight, and we talked a lot about books. I sent her away with Jesus Freaks and my copy of Blue Like Jazz. She promised me her copies of The End of Religion, Girl Soldier and Nine Parts of Desire. Recently, Megan mentioned that she had followed a link from one of my notes to Nattie's website and was touched by what she read there. So, with the two of them on my mind, here is my challenge to you:

Read a book that is not yours or a book that someone has given to you. Not a book they gave you because you wanted it, but a book they gave you because THEY loved it and wanted to share it with you. A book someone suggested to you (even if you have to buy the actual copy you read) is what I am getting at.

Nat was always reviewing the books she read and picking up books we thought she would like. We sent each other books all the time, and I am sure I am not the only one she traded volumes with. So, this is the Beg, Borrow or Steal Challenge (though, stealing isn't good, okay?).

Pick one book for this challenge and read it in January. Easy peasy, right?

Send me links for the sidebar if you want to be linked here. I will take down the Babysteps challenge list after Jan 1st and put up the Beg, Borrow or Steal list. As usual, post any reviews in the comments and I will create a post for those links.

Happy New Year!

Heather

PERFECT because I have the book in my stack and it needs to be read soon!

My book is "The Brushstroke Legacy" by Lauraine Snelling, loaned to me by my friend Peggy.

What a beautiful premise for a challenge! I am selecting On Agate Hill by Lee Smith for this challenge. I have posted about my selection and this challenge on my blog, if you're interested.

Thanks!

Great idea! Mine is going to be Mere Christianity by CS Lewis (duh). :) My husband gave it to me and I have put it off far too long. (And this will also cross over with my Foundational Faith challenge!)

Great idea. :)

Mine is going to be Gilead by Marilynne Robison -- another one of Dana's reccomendations that I have from PBS but haven't read yet.

I forgot to mention in my last comment that I also put a poll on my blog. So, if your read "Water for Elephants" yourself, please vote on your rating of it.

Thanks!

I'm in. I recieved A Painted House by John Grisham from a friend. Over a decade ago, while on a long road trip, I listened to The Pelican Brief and it was so dull, there were times I wondering if listening to nothing would be less boring. It wasn't my car or my book on tape, so I said nothing, but promised myself I'd never read another John Grisham novel. After telling a friend that story, she gave me this book, insisting I'd love it. So I'm about to break that promise I made to myself and read this book that I've been putting off for months. Karen (I don't have a blog)

Okay, so I didn't finish "Those Who Trespass..." but I was wondering if a book I inherited would count?

See, my grandmother died lately. Like me, she was an avid reader, and as she was a huge lover of Winnie-the-Pooh, she passed those on to me. But since I didn't really neither beg, borrow or steal it, I don't know if it would count?

January is/was absolutely crazy for me, so I didn't even get to post until now, but I loved this challenge, Heather, especially since Nattie and I passed books and author recommendations back and forth constantly. While I was trying to decide which book to read for this particular challenge, we went to dinner at a friend's house, and voila - she gave me a book that her mother had passed on to her! I read, and enjoyed, Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier.
